QUICK ANSWER
An ended auction and a positive bid do not by themselves establish a completed sale. Read the price together with its field name, outcome and observation date.
Give every price a label
A current bid describes bidding activity. A Buy Now amount is an offered purchase price. A sale-price field is meaningful only in the context of the source’s sale outcome. A historical last-sale field may refer to the same event already shown elsewhere; it is not automatically a separate transaction.
For example, a $4,000 bid on an ended lot is not enough to write “sold for $4,000”. Keep it as a recorded bid unless there is an explicit outcome supporting a stronger statement.
Use a small comparison table
Keep the original terms visible when working across platforms.
| Field | Safe interpretation |
|---|---|
| Current bid | Recorded bidding amount at that observation |
| Buy Now | Listed direct-purchase amount, subject to the listing |
| Sale price with a confirmed sold outcome | Recorded result for that lot |
| Last recorded sale price | Historical field requiring event/date context |
| Ended | Timing or process status; not sufficient proof of sale |
Treat approval and relisting carefully
An approval-related status should retain its qualification. Do not shorten it to an unconditional completed sale. Read the applicable platform’s explanation and wait for a later confirmed outcome when your decision depends on it.
When a lot appears again, compare platform, lot number, VIN and dates. A new observation may update the old record. A new lot number may indicate a relisting. Neither alone proves another accident or another owner.
Compare like with like
Use the same price type, currency and fee basis across the vehicles in your comparison. A headline bid before fees cannot be compared directly with an all-in delivered cost. Record the observation date because a listing can change after you saved it.
In VIN Lookup, sale price is projected only for explicit supported sold outcomes; an ended status is not converted into a sale. The separate current-bid and additional-price fields help preserve that distinction. Use the budget calculator to add your own costs after you have identified the relevant price.
Before you decide
- Keep the source field name next to the amount.
- Check outcome and observation date.
- Preserve approval qualifications.
- Distinguish repeated snapshots from distinct events.
- Compare prices on the same fee and currency basis.
Common questions
Can an auction end without a confirmed sale?
Yes. The ended label alone does not establish a completed transaction.
Why can two price fields contain the same amount?
They can describe overlapping observations of the same event; matching values do not prove two sales.
